About the Tutor
Fiona Agombar had ME for 15 years but recovered thanks to following a yoga lifestyle with the guidance of her teachers Bill Feeney and Angela Stephens. She wrote Beat Fatigue with Yoga in 1997 and was Trustee of Action for ME for 10 years. She originally trained with the Yoga for Health Foundation, then undertook their remedial training in 2005. She has spent time at the Vyasa ashram in Bangalore studying yoga and is currently training as a KHYF teacher. Her mentor is Gill Lloyd. Fiona teaches retreats and workshops for those with ME all over the UK and in Turkey. She has just completed a course on the Patanjali Sutras with Desikachar and Kastaub and is currently studying Vedanta with her teacher Ram, a disciple of Swami Chinmayananda and Sw Dayananda. She is a regular contributor to Yoga and Health magazine.
The purpose of this retreat is to:
- give yoga teachers and interested health professionals a clear understanding of what Chronic Fatigue/ME is and how it affects the mind/body/spirit both from a medical point of view and from the yoga energetic point of view.
- look at the differences between ME and Chronic Fatigue and other illnesses which are included under the umbrella of CFS
- examine how ME impacts on people culturally and to understand the ME personality and ME as a rajasic condition.
- explain the fight or flight response and how this can be calmed down using the breath and relaxation techniques to help with symptoms.
- examine CFS/ME as a spiritual crisis.
- Getting back in touch with the authentic Self.
The intended learning outcomes include:
- An understanding of how to prevent a relapse and how to encourage healing with gentle yoga.
- An understanding of the different levels of ME and how the illness follows a relapse/remission pattern
- An understanding of the full yoga tool box and different teaching methods which can promote healing
- An understanding of the widespread nature of this condition and how very gentle the asana practise needs to be.
- An understanding of Patanjali sutra 1:2 and the relevance to CFS/ME
- An understanding of the fight or flight response and its relevance in hyper-arousal and chronic conditions.
By the end of the course teachers will be given the contacts so that they will be able to set up either specialised ME/CFS groups, or will be able to integrate students who are recovering in to their classes – or will feel equipped to teach 1 to 1.
